Why the battery, not the bike, sets the rules

Flying with a luxury ebike

Under US federal aviation rules, passengers may carry lithium-ion batteries up to 100 watt-hours in carry-on freely, and batteries between 100 and 160 watt-hours only with airline approval and in limited quantity. Choose a hitch-mounted platform rack rated explicitly for ebikes, ideally with a loading ramp, and remove the battery for the drive, both to reduce weight and to protect the pack from vibration and weather. Shipping the whole bike, battery included

If the bike must move as freight, whether for relocation, sale, or warranty return, the cleanest route is through a bike shop or the brand itself, because they hold the carrier accounts, certified packaging, and hazard labels that lithium shipments require. Private individuals can ship a battery by ground with some carriers if they follow the packaging and labeling requirements exactly, but errors can result in the package being refused or returned and, in serious cases, penalties. The pack must be packed in its original or an approved box, protected against short circuit, and declared.

For the bike itself, use a hard case or a robust bike box with padding at the dropouts, derailleur or belt tensioner, and display mount, and photograph everything before sealing.
